I believe in free, open software and the collaboration with the community to improve it, and I do the work out of passion for coding and for sharing. But I also believe many maintainers are not properly appreciated, and some do depend on sponsorships for their livelihood.
A culture shift where maintainers of OS projects receive a compensation is going to be healthy for the OS community long-term.
