We're the MetaBrainz Foundation, a California non-profit that believes in free, open access to data. The foundation has been set up to build community maintained databases using open source software and make them available in the public domain or under Creative Commons licenses.
Our data is mostly gathered by volunteers and verified by peer review to ensure it is consistent and correct. All non-commercial use of this data is free, but commercial users are asked to support us in order to help fund the project. We encourage all our users to contribute to the data gathering process so that it can be as comprehensive as possible.
We've created the MusicBrainz, Picard Music Tagger and Cover Art Archive projects that are widely used throughout the world. We're currently also working hard on AcousticBrainz and ListenBrainz, two new projects designed to provide new services and allow us to gather more data that we can use to create open source music recommendation engines. Our most recent project is the BookBrainz project that hopes to apply everything we've learned from music to books.
Any support that you decide to give us will be used to fund our developers and our hosting operations. We have a small team of developers and a modest collection of servers that serve millions of API/web page requests every day.
