Hey! I'm Jerad, a software developer and founder of Packstack, an open source platform used by backpackers to plan expeditions into the wilderness.
Why make Packstack open source?
Unlike a lot of open source technologies, Packstack isn't the kind of tool you'd install in your own project. Instead, it's a standalone web app built specifically for backpacking (or any activity where you travel with a lot of gear).
I've noticed that, somewhat paradoxically, a good chunk of developers are also into backpacking. So why not make the codebase public and receive contributions from the community? I love the idea that anyone able to make the project better merely needs the will to do it.
Why sponsor me?
Money means different things to different people at different times. In this particular case, your sponsorship would (1) motivate me to continue working hard on Packstack and (2) help pay for the cost of running the project (servers, databases, domains, etc.).
Eventually, I want to break out the component-izable pieces of the application into self-contained, open source repos. That, however, will be a little ways down the road.
