Having spent 22 years living and working around the world, developing and honing my Wells/Drilling Engineering skills on a range of Oil and Gas projects, I'm aware of how opaque the industry is and I want to change this.
So I'm using my self taught Python skills to program up common Wells/Drilling Engineering tasks (and trying out a few new techniques along the way) to give developers a head start to implement new ideas and ways of working.
Why does the Oil and Gas industry remain so closed? Money.
Operating companies believe that their data gives them competitive advantage, so they keep it tightly locked up. Service companies believe that by maintaining proprietary software they'll lock in operators and maintain their revenues. The reality is that this behavior stifles creativity and is a barrier for developers to enter into the industry.
Developing a set of Python libraries for performing standard Wells/Drilling Engineering tasks breaks down these barriers and brings transparency to the industry, making it more competitive and leading to more creativity and development, which drives efficiency.
I'm keen to transfer knowledge from other industries into Oil and Gas. For example, the mesh clearance code for determining well collision risks is taken straight from the robotics industry.
As a consultant, my work is dictated by the boom/bust cycles of the oil and gas industry. During the bust cycles, rather than transfer to another industry I prefer to consolidate my knowledge and experience into a form that can I can transfer to others. Coding is my chosen medium. Sponsorship helps me realize this ideology.
