Haiku has a very big goal: creating an entire, cohesive operating system from scratch; not another Linux distribution, and it isn't inspired by Windows or macOS, but by an operating system from the 1990s called BeOS. We wish to create a system that has the charm and usability of BeOS with various modern updates such as an innovative packaging system, clever and efficient vector icons, and of course, a modern web browser and other applications that people now expect.
Haiku, like most open-source projects, has primarily been volunteer-driven, and despite this has achieved some pretty lofty goals. Nonetheless, an entire operating system is a large project, and building and maintaining one purely on volunteer efforts is an almost impossible task. Thus, Haiku has solicited donations in order to fund various full-time contracts over the years (including a currently ongoing one), with the ultimate dream of funding a team of full-time developers.
Your donations will go directly towards the funding of such contracts, as well as infrastructure costs and other expenses. (Haiku, Inc. publishes funding and expenditure reports with details.)
