gprMax is an open-source computational electrodynamics software, internationally established as the de facto tool for modelling Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), with a large and vibrant community of users in academia and industry.
Computational electrodynamics is an inclusive term that describes the numerical simulation of electromagnetic fields and their interaction with physical objects. It typically involves the numerical evaluation of Maxwell’s equations, which can sufficiently describe all macroscopic phenomena related
to electromagnetics. Hence computational electrodynamics has a uniquely diverse set of applications: Civil Engineering and the Built Environment, Digital Signal Processing, Ground Engineering, and Artificial Intelligence, as well as Security and Defence.
gprMax is developed by a small team (3!) of academics working at different universities in the UK. Despite the size of our team, gprMax has a significant impact in many different application areas of research and industry. Any funding that we are able to secure enables to make step changes in the functionality and features of software, e.g. our selection for the Google Summer of Code programme has led to several new toolboxes being added.
