Imagine a protracted disaster situation where electrical power is scarce, infrastructure failure has impacted cellular and internet services, and to complete the picture, propagation has decided not to cooperate. This combination of circumstances is both realistic and quite probable; having lived through storms and hurricanes ranging from severe to catastrophic and having also participated in multiple EmComm exercises, I have seen first hand the impacts and challenges facing operators when conducting emergency communications.
These experiences along with my own testing and experiments in the field of digital ham radio, made it clear to me that the current lineup of tools and techniques available to operators, while excellent in many respects, has some gaps and limitations. It seemed to me that with some careful planning and the right tools, maintaining effective and reliable emergency communications, even in the most challenging conditions, would be quite doable.
The above is just one example of where I perceive there to be a need for new ideas, new innovations and new tools for ham radio. I am using my knowledge and expertise to innovate new protocols, techniques, and open source tools to tackle these and other challenges. Currently, I have several projects in beta release and a number of others in the very early embryonic development phase. The tools can be used in many environments and give the ham radio operator flexibility to choose from a wider variety of methods and techniques. Through the use of a cross platform methodology, the operator also has the freedom to choose the platform that works best for them.
