I'm a Cloud Architect (which is a fancy way of saying I can set distributed systems up in a fault tolerant way on AWS), currently doing my own venture.

My current "big idea" is ScractchStack, an open-source AWS stack you can run on your laptop that mimics AWS in requests/replies as closely as possible, while staying within the confines of a typical developer's laptop.
Why would I want such a thing? you might ask. There are a number of use cases, some of which were inspired by personal need:
Road warriors. Alas, trying to develop for the cloud while flying across the country through the clouds is usually an exercise in futility.
Simulating AWS failures. By having an AWS stack that you can configure and modify directly, you can simulate unusual AWS conditions and code defensively against them.
Replicating individual AWS services elsewhere. You may have developed against a specific AWS service that isn't available in a particular AWS region (China or GovCloud), or have a customer that needs to run your code on-premises or in, say, Azure. Rather than rewrite your code, you can deploy "just enough" of AWS to this environment.
Sponsorship funds would offset some of the development costs and allow me to spend more time working on these types of "spare time" tasks.
Ephemeral cloud stack on your laptop.
