Thanks for taking the time to check this page out.
The Block Protocol (Þ) is an independent, open protocol and hosting service for blocks. Specifically, Þ blocks:
are frontend components which are free to use and accessible by anybody
can be embedded within any app that supports the protocol, instantly usable without any setup configuration or integration
Blocks let users do all sorts of things, including:
quick-capture information in an unstructured fashion;
work with and manipulate highly-structured data;
interface with powerful external APIs;
and blocks can even be assembled into complex applications.
We're aiming to building a more open, interoperable web.
This starts with the type system that blocks use, and in standardizing the ways in which blocks communicate with the applications that embed them.
We're asking for your non-financial help.
In writing the specification and developing helper utilities that result in a good developer experience.
In building blocks to populate the Þ Hub, so that users have more blocks to choose from, and embedders have a greater incentive to adopt the protocol
In bringing support for the Þ to additional environments, beyond those currently available)
If you can afford it, we're also asking for your sponsorship.
Aside from the time and expense involved in all of the above, we face a number of costs in hosting blocks and making them freely available for use, without limitation.
Our ultimate goal is to break down walled gardens and eliminate barriers to interoperability. As such, we didn't want to fund our operations through the sale of a 'token', and instead see Wikimedia as a more appropriate model as to how our operations can be sustained.
With your sponsorship, we'll be able to keep developing the Block Protocol independently, and respond more to the needs of users.
Your sponsorship will also allow us to invest more time in higher-quality documentation: blog posts, tutorials, and example repositories.
100% of all money received via GitHub sponsorship goes towards supporting our open-source packages and the development of the Þ specification itself.
